Prakriti & Vikriti
Who You Were Born To Be — And Who You've Become
In Ayurveda, there are two questions that change everything:
Who are you by nature?
And who have you become under the weight of life?
The answers live in two Sanskrit words: Prakriti and Vikriti.
These are not philosophical questions. They are clinical. They are the foundation of every Ayurvedic assessment — and the reason why two people with the same symptoms may need completely different treatments.
What is Prakriti?
Prakriti is your constitutional nature — the unique combination of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) that was set at the moment of your conception. It never changes. It is your factory setting.

Think of Prakriti like your fingerprint. No two are identical. It determines:
• Your body type and metabolism
• How you digest food — and emotions
• Your sleep patterns, energy rhythms, skin type
• How you respond to stress, love, and change
• What you naturally crave — and what depletes you

Prakriti is not your destiny. It is your nature. And knowing it is the most powerful tool for understanding yourself.
"Prakriti is the map of who you are. Vikriti is the territory of where you are right now."

The Three Doshas — A Quick Reference
What is Vikriti?
Vikriti is the present moment — the way your doshas are right now, after years of life, stress, diet, environment, and experience. It is the distance between who you were born to be and who you are today.

Vikriti is not failure. It is information.

It tells us: which dosha has gone out of balance, when it happened, and what is needed to return to your original nature.

A classic example: A Pitta Prakriti woman (sharp, driven, warm) who has spent years overworking, skipping meals, suppressing anger — may now present with Pitta Vikriti: inflammation, acid reflux, hair loss, emotional volatility. The solution is not to fight her Pitta nature — it is to cool the excess.
The Gap Between Prakriti and Vikriti = Your Healing Map
The greater the distance between your constitution and your current state — the more work there is to do. The smaller the gap — the more aligned your life already is with your nature.
How Do You Know Your Prakriti and Vikriti?
In classical Ayurveda, Prakriti and Vikriti are assessed through a combination of:
• pulse diagnosis (the most precise tool)
• observation of body, skin, eyes, tongue, nails
• structured questioning about digestion, sleep, emotions, history
• touch assessment of tissues and channels

Questionnaires can give you a preliminary direction — but they cannot replace the trained eye and hand of an Ayurvedic physician. Why? Because Vikriti is dynamic. It changes with seasons, age, lifestyle, and life events.
A common mistake
Many people take an online dosha quiz, identify as "Vata" — and then follow a generic Vata diet for years. But if their Vikriti is actually Pitta (from years of overwork and stress), a Vata-pacifying protocol may make things worse. This is why personalised assessment matters.
The approach
Why This Matters for Your Daily Life
Understanding Prakriti and Vikriti transforms how you approach everything:
  • Food
Not every superfood is right for every body. Ghee is medicine for Vata — and too much of it fans Pitta flames. Raw food cleanses Kapha — and destroys Vata digestion. Knowing your constitution means eating for YOUR body, not for a trend.
  • Exercise
Vata needs grounding, rhythmic movement — not intense cardio that depletes their already light energy. Pitta needs cooling, non-competitive practice — not hot yoga that adds fire to fire. Kapha needs vigour and stimulation — not slow, gentle practice that keeps them stuck.
  • Herbs and Supplements
This is where Ayurvedic pharmacology becomes precise. Ashwagandha is not universally calming — it is heating and can aggravate Pitta. Shatavari is cooling and deeply nourishing — ideal for Vata and Pitta, used carefully in Kapha. Getting this wrong wastes time and money. Getting it right — transforms health.
  • Seasons and Life Phases
Vata season (autumn/early winter) aggravates Vata constitutions. Pitta season (summer) pushes Pitta over the edge. Kapha season (late winter/spring) challenges Kapha types most. Your Prakriti tells you when to be extra vigilant — and Vikriti tells you what you've accumulated.
The Ayurvedic Goal
Not perfection. Not the same diet for everyone. The goal is to reduce Vikriti — to bring your current state as close as possible to your original Prakriti. To return to yourself.

Signs Your Doshas Are Out of Balance — Vikriti Clues
Where to Begin
Start with curiosity, not diagnosis. Begin to observe yourself:
• Do you tend toward anxiety or anger? Scattered or intense?
• Is your digestion variable or strong? Slow or sharp?
• Do you run cold or hot? Do you love or hate routine?
• When stressed — do you freeze, fight, or withdraw?

These patterns are your Prakriti speaking. The symptoms and complaints — that is your Vikriti asking for attention.

The most powerful thing Ayurveda offers is not a herb, a diet, or a detox. It is a mirror. A way of seeing yourself — your original self — with clarity and compassion.

That is when real healing begins."
